alternate hypothesis

In statistics, the alternate hypothesis is the hypothesis that there is a relationship between two measured phenomena.  It is the hypothesis that some effect is present, that a treatment has an effect, or that two parameters differ. The alternate hypothesis is complimentary to the null hypothesis. If one is proven false, then the other must be true.
