My New Phone, the Moto G5 Plus

Moto G5 Plus

Powered by a 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, running a near-stock version of Android 7.0 Nougat and priced at less than 300 USD, the Moto G5 Plus has been crowned the best budget phone of 2017 by nearly ever reviewer to handle it. The phone is carrier unlocked, and Motorola remains one of the few phone manufactures not only open to, but actually friendly about, bootloader unlocking. By all metrics, the Moto G5 Plus should be an Android hacker's playground, and in my limited experience with the device so far, it really is. After a 3 month hate/hate more relationship with an Asus Zenfone 3 Max, I finally decided yesterday that enough was enough. 4100 mAh battery or not, I needed a phone with an unlockable bootloader that I could root and bend to my will. It didn't take much research to determine the Moto G5 Plus was the phone I was looking for. Best Buy graciously took my299 and in return gave me a brand spankin’ new Moto G5 plus.

In the coming days and weeks I hope to document my experiences with the Moto G5 plus including unlocking the bootloader, installing custom recovery software, and ultimately rooting the phone. Look for more soon.
